Saying goes "Talent speaks itself" and needs a honest and fair appreciation then and there. Amin Gulgee,s name is not unknown to our showbiz and art industry. His is a huge name in the field of Art. His work well acknowledged in the country and abroad equally. Amin Gulgee is one of those few Artists our country who,s talent not only speaks itself, but also it forms a shape of a living, sits with you and communicates wearing a friendly smile. You can find a living soul in his work. A breathing soul behind his every thought given to his work. But of course, one needs to have an instinct of an artist to develop such a contact with Gulgee,s master pieces, otherwise you will bang your head with one of his hugely erected studio walls.
I happened to visit one of his recent exhibitions at Performance Art ( his house cum work place ) in Karachi. The first day went as the usual exhibition day, little crowd, few serious people and other attending for socializing. In fact it disappointed me a little as i was expecting serious people with an eye of an artist. Somehow, it happens in such a society where we belong to. To my great excitment today,s was an exclusive day and for the real people.
The exhibition, titled "Riwaity" means Traditional. And the Raiwaity explicated the living artists. The artists gave a picture of those characters ( professions ) to the audience upon which our modern day society was based on. And often we interacted with them in our daily routine life. They complete our society, and were part of us.
I remember an exhibition i attended in one of the old galleries of London, back in 2006-7. I was deeply impressed yet fascinated by the the art work of young European artists, specially Spanish and Greek. That exhibition left marks in my memories. But Gulgee,s work vanished those old memories in a single stroke. The brilliant ideas elaborated by the living artists, the thoughts given to their execution and performance and work done on them, was highly commendable. And Even after spending 2 hours in his exhibition and after taking hundreds of pictures i wanted to take another 360 round to catch some more glimpse.
And I think, such is the talent, which keeps its audience strongly knitted with his each and every master piece.
