"People wouldn't lend me the clothes. But that's fashion snobbery," the Daily Mail quoted Formichetti as saying.
Formichetti - creative director of Mulgar and fashion director of Uniqlo - said he approached several designers who all declined in having their clothes worn by the reality star with less-than-model-like-proportions, as Elle described her five-foot-two-inch frame.
Formichetti said that they worked with what was given to them, including several Tom ford pieces, as well as Roberto Cavaili, and Victor and Rolf, and managed to put together several looks.
On Twitter on Thursday, he backed away from the remarks, claiming that his words had been twisted.
"taken out of context again..Working with @kimkardashian was amazing we had more than enough options for @ellemagazine !!' he wrote, adding that he was looking forward to working with the reality star again (sic)," he tweeted.
