ASIA was the destination Olivier Rousteing had on his mind when thinking about the autumn/winter 2013-14 menswear Balmain collection.
"The idea was to mix a short, narrow jacket with low-crotch trousers that are almost like sarouels [wide trousers] and top them with a wraparound belt for a high waist," explained the designer in his show notes. "And I wanted to give tailoring a sporty side too, so there's always an oversized bomber as a top layer."
The signature Balmain DNA was there – the biker jackets, always the biker jacket – but it was wrapped up (literally) with a new twist via the harem styles of trousers, elaborate cummerbunds and martial-arts shapes combined with ceremonial embellishments.
Puffa and quilted jackets echoed the decorative formations of kimono variations before them which made for a surprisingly cohesive turn when at times the distance between Asia and skiwear climes seemed far too far apart when played out in sartorial terms.
