Croatia has 1,244 islands sprinkled along its rocky coast, and they are surrounded by evidence of the maritime powers that have historically battled for control over the Adriatic Sea: the Romans, Illyrians, Venetians and others.

There are also 48 lighthouses scattered across the Adriatic, all of which were built in the 19th Century during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, the government refurbished several of the lighthouses as inns, and the Struga Lighthouse (pictured) on Lostovo Island, 120km south of Split, is one of 11 lighthouses in Croatia in which island-hopping travellers can rent apartments.
